San Diego Motorcycle Training

We recommend the Begin2ride course for beginners as they prepare for their learner’s permit. Once you know how to operate a motorcycle, we recommend completing 500 miles of appropriate on-street practice before testing on your bike and receiving your final license at the DMV.

We stopped giving out the waiver of skill (DL 389) for the DMV test since the licensed motorcycle driver fatality rate had doubled. We believe that the DMV on-bike test is a much better measure of your riding skills. If you’re not ready for your license, we’d much rather you know your skills need more work.

Note to military new riders: Even though our Begin2ride and Continue2ride grad cards have been accepted to obtain base stickers, we do not recommend base safety offices assign you a sticker until you complete all 5 Steps to become a knowledgeable motorcycle operator!

San Diego Motorcycle Training offers beginner and intermediate motorcycle safety courses, lessons, and instruction developed by the National Motorcycle Training Institute, nmcti.org. Driving a motorcycle is dangerous, but there are ways to reduce some of the danger.

We offer several different courses to meet your needs and exeperience level. We provide the motorcycle and helmet! Graduates of our classes qualify for motorcycle insurance discounts.

Begin2ride Course: I can already ride a pedal bicycle, and now want to learn to operate a motorcycle.
Continue2ride Course: I already learned how to operate a motorcycle and now want to practice some more and get some coaching on riding in traffic.
Rental Course I'd like to get even more street riding practice before buying my motorcycle.

What is motorcycle safety? Can you be safe riding a motorcycle on the street?

All sports we participate in have risks. Its important to understand that operating a motorcycle on the street is a high risk activity when compared to operating other vehicles. We can reduce some of the risks, and we have complete control over eliminating the unnecessary risks! National Motorcycle Training Institute safety instruction is specifically designed to help eliminate the unnecessary risks of motorcycle riding.

Motorcycles are much more dangerous than passenger cars. Per 100 million miles traveled, the fatality rate for motorcycle drivers is 27.0, compared to 0.8 for passenger car drivers. Over a recent ten year period, the number of annual motorcycle driver fatalities doubled in California--from 122 to 256.

Our goal is to help you avoid being one of the statistics. One leading cause of the increase in fatalities is taking a training course that includes an easy-to-pass skills test for licensing. We strongly urge you to develop your skills so that passing the unbiased DMV test conducted at the DMV is easy. We believe that test is a much better measure of your riding skills. If you’re not ready for the street, we’d much rather you know that your skills need more work.

After completing the Begin2ride Course, we recommend practicing at least 500 on-street miles before testing for your final license.

The first step to motorcycle safety is to recognize the different periods of your motorcycling journey. There is the Beginner-Time, the Learner-Time, and the Ongoing Rider-Time.

San Diego Motorcycle Training offers three programs:
Begin2ride and Continue2ride and Going2ride rentals

Begin2ride is for brand new riders. It is the course you should take before applying for a DMV motorcycle license, before taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course or Riders Edge course, and before taking a CHP course. The Begin2ride course is for people to learn and practice Basic Motorcycle Operation. Because it has been shown to reduce crashes, it is absolutely the best preparation you can accomplish for your Learner-Time!

Continue2ride incorporates street riding techniques that will be applied to everyday riding. Continue2ride includes a rental program which allows you to take home a 250cc motorcycle to practice the street riding techniques you learned from the previous practice sessions in a real world environment, your neighborhood!

Going2ride rentals allows you to get in some additional riding practice before deciding to get your license or buy a motorcycle.
